Giant steps

Wanderer
bill "First we'll do a waltz, which is straight 3/4 all the way through...it's like 3/16 sort of..now going out, we do a triple tag, the rhythm is like this - see what I mean? So it's like 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2, 1-2-3, 1-2-3...this is with a breath like..." - [plays polyrhythms on "Autumn Leaves"] "...it's not much..." - "...just a straight ballad, you go into double-time on the first ending, and then for 16 bars - you'll feel it all, just straight ballad..." [Evans and Gomez then play "just straight ballad" with generous helpings of polyrhythms] Then Gomez "calms" the drummer with a bit of gallows humor: "If you goof, we just stop and you get fired, that's all, it's no problem." - Second explanation of the triple tag: "It's 1-3, 1-2, 1-2, 1-3, you know what I mean? ...Don't put yourself into any tension about any of those things. Because I'd rather have you miss them and be relaxed". Then, just to be sure the drummer misses them, after rejecting Gomez' suggestion of the familiar standard "Fine and Dandy" as theme, he springs his own wicked rhythm composition "Five" with no preparation at all - leaving the drummer hopelessly lost, before admitting: "I think we should do that again, because I sprung it on Alex". The only time Evans smiles is when he succeeds in completely messing up the drummer and the time gets turned around. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=559&v=2mn0hZtVE04

Gran bell'album! @Lacatus https://www.theguardian.com/music/2017/sep/07/tony-allen-the-source-review-drummers-blue-note-debut-reframes-jazz-in-his-own-image
