Tutto è disposto: bilanciato, adeguato, Miles non spreca una nota. Poi a 4 minuti irrompe un treno lanciato alla massima velocità, John Coltrane Questo sarà l'ulrimo tour assieme per Davis e Coltrane e la tensione artistica tra i due si nota anche nella musica. Trane ormai era incontenibile persino per Miles, strabordante. Doveva intraprendere la sua strada. Miles, a malincuore, lo sapeva. E' incredibile che due tipi cosi diversi siano stati tanto assieme. Uno estroverso, sicuro, ai limiti della strafottenza. Ma intelligentissimo, tosto. L'altro umilissimo, silenzioso, quasi si vergognava, Uno dopo i concerti andava a far baldoria; l'altro se usciva di stanza era un evento. Miles diceva che Coltrane non si si sarebbe accorto di una donna manco se se la fosse trovata davanti nuda. Finchè suonava quel sax, non pensava ad altro. I soli di Coltrane quella sera a Parigi sono torrenziali, feroci, ma luminosi, limpidi, chiari allo stesso tempo; una roba obbiettivamente mai sentiti prima. E il pubblico parigino LO FISCHIA. Fischia Coltrane! Non che la cosa facesse piacere a Miles, ovviamente, però difendeva sempre Coltrane. Nonostante le battutine - tipo invitarlo a togliersi quel sax dalla bocca ogni tanto - , lo adorava. E Coltrane adorava Miles; ma che non potessero andare avanti ancora, era evidente. Eppure, da sta tensione sentite che roba. E Miles se ne strabatte il flauto se uno dei suoi, un suo sideman - perchè quello era Coltrane - si prendeva tanto spazio, finchè faceva quelle robe, robe che a lui piacevano. Successivamente Miles suonò con tantissimo straordinari sassofonositi, primo fra tutti Shorter. Ma come Trane non c'era veramente nessuno. Ma la quantità di grandi dischi li dentro è pazzesca...e non solo hard bop! Andrew Hill, Grachan Moncur, Bobby Htcherson, Herbie, Wayne, Sam Rivers, Mccoy Tyner...dolphy! E sull hard bop: Duke Pearson, Blue Mitchell, Hank Mobley, Tina Brooks, per tacere dei famosi...
