In a worldwide radio exclusive Radiohead's guitarist, arranger and multi-instrumentalist Jonny Greenwood speaks to Matt Everitt about his musical life, his influences, Radiohead's history and the band's newalbum A Moon Shaped Pool - the first time anyone from Radiohead has spoken to radio or press about the release. Photo attached.

Radiohead are one of, if not the most important band in the world right now - a band who have shifted the parameters of what a rock band is capable of, who in their 30 year career have continually pushed themselves into new musical directions and produced some of best albums of all time.

Jonny Greenwood is a hugely respected and innovative composer in his own right, performing around the world with the BBC Concert, Australian Chamber and London Contemporary Orchestras, and has created award winning scores for films including There Will Be Blood and The Master. He talks about the varied music that obsessed him growing up - from The Fall and New Order to classical composers like Krzysztof Penderecki who still impact on his work today. He looks back to Radiohead's early days and how they coped with the huge success that followed 1997's OK Computer, and their creative processes in the recording studio.

He also discusses his acclaimed film soundtracks, working with director Paul Thomas Anderson, how Radiohead missed out on doing a James Bond theme and the writing and recording of their new album A Moon Shaped Pool.

il podcast con quel tizio é abbastanza interessante, solo che lui (Buxton) é abbastanza insopportabile e vuole assolutamente essere spiritoso. I jingle durante l'intervista sono da codice penale

There’s songs like “Burn The Witch” which, very rarely for us, we managed to get strings on near the beginning. We left it unfinished on purpose and left lots of room for the strings and we never do that usually. Usually the strings are the icing on top. And this time it was there from the start to be more of a feature for what strings can do. At the end of “Daydreaming” I got the cellos to all tune their bottom strings down about a fifth. But then still try to play the music. So you can hear them struggling to stay in tune and you have the low growl sound. That’s the kind of music they play anyway, and just all felt really effortless and exciting. You want to use strings in a way that isn’t just pastiche and that can be hard to avoid. That was fun, trying to square that circle.

Mooooolto interessante: quindi la Strega è stata laciata incompleta per dare spazio agli archi che erano stati incisi all'inizio delle registrazioni (e non alla fine, come classica ciliegina sulla torta). 

Mentre in Daydreaming l'accordatura degli archi è stata abbassata di una quinta (cioè 5 semitoni  ) per ottenere quel suono macabro che caratterizza la parte finale "half of my life".
Peccato veramente per Daydreaming perché la scrittura non mi entusiasma per niente, mentre l'arrangiamento è geniale. Ripeto quello che ho scritto da altre parti: Glass Eyes per la sua pura bellezza, meritava l'arrangiamento di Daydreaming.

Mi è capitato casualmente di sentirmi l'intervista di oggi di Jonny su BBC6! Molto bella!

Tra le cose più interessanti:

- L'ordine alfabetico: pare che, dopo aver scelto i pezzi, li abbiano inizialmente messi in ordine alfabetico e a loro sembrava che stessero benissimo in sequenza così. Poi hanno avuto grossi dubbi perché gli sembrava una cosa stupida, ma poi han pensato che fosse altresì stupido non lasciarli in ordine alfabetico anche se stavano bene solo perché sembrava stupido (che al mercato mio padre comprò).

- Tour 2017: Non c'è ancora assolutamente NIENTE di certo o di pianificato. Dice che non hanno voglia di mettersi lì a pianificare con mesi di anticipo, anche se dovrebbero, e quindi al momento assicura che non c'è niente di certo;

- Burn the witch: Il pezzo riportato sopra da @Wanderer e @Lacatus è molto interessante. Io mi ero sempre chiesto se l'arrangiamento orchestrale con cui ci han fatto venire l'acquolina in bocca per dieci anni fosse poi effettivamente quello registrato (quindi principalmente la tecnica col legno/pizzicato). Questa intervista la leggo in questo senso, ossia "Sì, 10 anni fa abbiam deciso che l'avremmo fatta così ma poi non l'abbiam mai effettivamente registrata". Capisco che comunque si possa anche leggere nel senso di "abbiam registrato gli archi all'inizio delle sessioni e poi abbiam pensato a tutto il resto", ma io resto della mia idea, anche perché sinceramente in sè la canzone non mi dà l'idea di essere un pezzo "da orchestra" a tutti i costi, lo diventa solo nell'ottica di questo arrangiamento.

- Gli hanno anche chiesto sul significato della canzone, e lui giustamente ha risposto "queste cose chiedetele a Thom, io scrivo solo gli archi"

- Spectre gliel'hanno cassata perché troppo dark rispetto al film, loro han poi deciso di finirla lo stesso dopo che gli era stata cassata.

- Poi sulla sua storia musicale tutte cose abbastanza conosciute ma interessanti, ma forse qui sarebbe OT.
